TALENTED teenager Robbie Stewart racked up his second successive victory and scored the first pole position of his career at Cadwell Park on August Bank Holiday Monday.
The confident young Scot passed Ashley Beech early on the last lap and and held on to win the race by 0.1 sec despite giving away a considerable top end speed advantage to his rival.
KRP team boss Mark Keen said: "The bike was not as strong as we would have liked. Robbie rode fantastically well and had to pass people the hard way. He was having to do it all on the brakes."
Stewart pulled clear of Beech on the final lap but then missed the apex at the Hairpin and the Oldham rider closed the gap, setting up a dramatic run through Barn corner onto the finishing straight. "He jumped on the brakes a bit and the back end came up in the air," explained Keen. "So he had to let off and run wide. He lost momentum but recovered well and he'd done enough through Hall Bends to hang on and win."
Anthony Rogers overcame arm pump problems and recovered from a practice crash to finish fourth, passing title contender Kev Coghlan on the penultimate bend of the race. "A much slower rider got in his way at the Gooseneck on his first flying lap of the meeting which did his confidence no good whatsoever," said Keen. "But he put in a typically gutsy performance and rode really well to be running in fifth towards the end of the race. Then he went under Coghlan at the hairpin and although Coghlan tried to lean on him, Ant was strong and didn't give way."
Although fast on some parts of the Lincolnshire track, fellow KRP rider Tom Hayward was perhaps slightly off form at his home circuit and he finished ninth behind Rob Guiver. And Ulsterman Nikki Coates crashed out spectacularly on lap five when the bike suffered a mechanical failure.
Stewart is third in the British title standings and needs just two more points to secure victory in the ACU Cup Championship. Coates is sixth in the championship table, despite failing to score in the last two rounds, one place ahead of Hayward. Rogers is fifth in the Cup and tenth in the overall standings.
The penultimate round of the BSB series takes place at Donington Park on September 23.
