Perthshire teenager Robbie Stewart's superb late season form continued at the penultimate round of the British 125GP Championship at Donington Park, where he took his third consecutive race win, and with it secured the 2007 ACU Academy Cup.
The KRP rider was never out the top four during the practice and qualifying sessions and put in an impressive and mature race performance in cool blustery conditions to take the race win by over four seconds.
The weekend started steadily for Robbie, easing through Friday morning's dry practice session in 4th overall, before electing to sit out the wet afternoon free practice. The weather forecast suggested dry conditions for the rest of the weekend, and with Robbie fully familiar with the 2.5 mile circuit from his recent wildcard entry at the British 125 GP, he elected not to risk venturing out on to the wet circuit.
First qualifying on Saturday morning saw Robbie again take 4th place on a damp track, but the lap times really started to fall in the afternoon's second qualifying session – this time held on dry Donington tarmac. Robbie's best time of 1.42.3 on his 10th lap put him on top of the standings and it looked like he'd take pole position for Sunday's race right up until the second last lap when fellow Scot Kev Coghlan stole the first place on the grid by just 0.265 of a second.
Sunday dawned dry but windy, and for once the 125 race was held in the middle of the race programme. Robbie got an excellent start and was soon battling with both Kev and series leader Luke Jones. The two Scots then pulled away at the front, but with Kev pushing hard for the win (the only result that could keep his title hopes alive) his luck ran out when he slid off on lap 8, leaving Robbie to control the rest of the race from the front. He extended his lead to over six seconds at one stage before crossing the line well ahead of second placed Luke Jones and French newcomer Louis Rossi.
Robbie's impressive Donington performance - and a maximum 75 points from the last three rounds - now moves him to within three points of Kev in the race for runner up spot in the Championship, so it'll be an all out battle of the Scots at the final race of the season at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit on the 14th of October.
Robbie would like to congratulate Luke Jones on winning this year’s 125GP Championship.
