Silverstone 27-29 April 2007

With a mixed start to the season behind him - a first round 4th and a second round DNF - Robbie went into the Silverstone weekend looking to get his 2007 campaign back on track with a strong showing at the fast Northamptonshire circuit.

Having largely recovered from the shoulder injury he sustained during a painful Thruxton meeting two weeks earlier, Robbie was in good shape as Friday practice began. The weekend however started badly when a combination of cold conditions and front end suspension problems resulted in a crash at the fast Copse corner during first practice.

Despite being sore from his early off, Robbie still managed to end the practice day in 8th place and, having sorted out the suspension by Saturday qualifying, he then put in two strong sessions, finishing 7th in the morning and 6th in the afternoon, despite the continuing cold conditions. His best lap of 1.35.052 gave him 6th place in combined qualifying and a second row start for Sunday’s race.

While most of the UK basked in unseasonable sunshine, low temperatures at Silverstone once again greeted the 125 riders on race day. As the lights went out, Robbie got a good start on the KRP Honda and quickly made up places, only to find himself blocked in at the first corner and relegated to 8th as the pack rounded Copse.

Despite the initial set back, Robbie then set about working his way back through the front runners and he steadily made his way up to 6th place by lap eight. Aware of the need to bring the bike home in the points, Robbie felt happy to hold that position for the remainder of the race while still looking to take advantage of any passing opportunities that came his way. Unfortunately, only a lap later, his race came to a premature end as his front wheel was clipped by fellow Scot Kev Coghlan, and Robbie once again crashed out – luckily without further injury.

With only his Brands Hatch points to show from three races so far, Robbie has managed to pack a season’s bad luck into just a couple of rounds, so all hopes will be for a change in fortune for round four. The BSB paddock moves to the picturesque Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire over the May Bank Holiday weekend, and with the 125s taking to the track between the two Superbike races, a huge crowd will be guaranteed as Robbie bids to get back on the podium once more.
