Another weekend dominated by the temperamental British weather ended in disappointment for Robbie Stewart as the Perthshire rider crashed out of Round 8 of the 125GP Championship at Oulton Park.
The weekend of ups and downs got off to a bad start during a first practice session, held in constant rain, on Friday. Robbie was sitting in 13th place on the timesheets when a major mechanical failure on the KRP Honda cut short his track time. A full engine change was required and, despite the best efforts of the mechanics, the bike wasn't ready in time to allow Robbie back on track for the day’s second outing.
Saturday dawned dry and bright, and Robbie was quickly on the pace, finishing first qualifying in 4th spot. Despite upping the pace further with a best lap time of 1.48.080 in the afternoon session, he then slipped just off the front row to finish in 5th place on the grid for race day.
Normal service was resumed on Sunday as the heavens opened and the BSB programme was once again shortened and reorganised. 7th in wet morning warm up meant Robbie was in good shape for the race but the poor conditions deteriorated further as the start of the shortened 125 race approached.
At the lights, Robbie got off to a good start and, despite dropping back slightly as the rain intensified, he then got into a good race rhythm before undoing all the hard work when he took to the grass and lost a number of places. Chasing hard, Robbie then got back in touch with the front runners before the tricky conditions finally caught him out and he high sided out of contention on lap seven - just before the race was red flagged.
Despite the disappointment of the DNF, Robbie retains his position in the overall championship - now sharing joint 3rd spot with Michael Wilcox, Nikki Coates and Ashley Beech. He also holds a 14 point lead in the Cup competition as the BSB paddock moves to Mallory Park for Round 9 on the 22nd of July.
